Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be a sad day just because you’re single. You can use the day/night to catch up on some reading.

Even if you’re not single, spending it reading a romance novel can still be a fun night.

Grab some chocolates, your favorite throw, and settle in for the night.

Here are five romance novels to get you started.

1. The Boyfriend Project — Farrah Rochon

The Boyfriend Project is a cute, amazingly written novel about IT superstar Samiah Brooks and her “date” with serial dater, Craig, who’s seeing two other women (and possibly more).

She finds this out when one of his other dates live-Tweets her date with him. Her sister notices the live-Tweets and alerts Samiah to the situation.

Obviously, Samiah’s smart enough to dump him (I won’t reveal how), but it ends up making her gain unwanted attention.

It also leads to her befriending the other two women Craig’s done wrong (London and Taylor) — and that leads to the Boyfriend Pact.

2. Everything, Everything — Nicola Yoon

Nicola Yoon’s Everything, Everything was surprisingly refreshing. I don’t normally pick up YA books, but something told me this was something special.

And I wasn’t wrong.

The book follows a sick teenager, Madeline Whitter, and her daily trials and tribulations being stuck in a bubble.

She can’t go outside, she can’t make new friends, and she only ever communicates with her nurse, Carla, and her mom.

The story follows Madeline as her interest becomes piqued by the boy who moves in next door, Olly.

From the moment they meet, you’re wondering what will become of them because of her condition.

She falls hard for Olly, the first boy she’s ever gotten the chance to be “normal” around. And she starts changing, breaking rules, becoming the woman she’s desperate to be. Someone not sick.

She breaks the rules one day and leaves the house, rejecting her sick bubble personality and choosing adventure, despite its risks. But it turns out to be one of the best decisions she’s ever made — and you’ll see why if you go grab your copy and get to reading.

3. Seven Days in June — Tia Williams

Seven Days in June is probably my favorite book, second only to the next book in this list.

It’s a breath of fresh air, as far as romance novels go.

It’s not going to paint a pretty picture for you and it won’t immerse you in a beautiful

Instead, it drags you into the haphazard life of Eva Mercier, a single mom and bestselling erotica writer with a medical condition that gives her migraines, and Shane Hall, a successful novelist who’s written four highly-praised novels and can charm the panties off of any well-read woman.

We get to see their relationship evolve through flashbacks to the past when they met in high school and through the lens of both of their current lives, which seem to entangle themselves together pretty meticulously in a way that adds depth to the entire story.

The way we get to weave through their colored, and often heartbreaking experiences, is a testament to great writing and added coherence.

The story is more than fully fleshed out, the characters vibrant and rich. It’s a novel you won’t want to miss.

And one you’ll likely laugh out loud at from just the first few pages once you read the opening scene. It’s a real treat.

4. Before I Let Go — Kennedy Ryan

Before I Let Go is incredibly well-written and has a story the touches on some of the most heartbreaking subjects we have to deal with as humans. The novel follows Yasmen and Josiah, who have two children together, and are recently divorced.

Throughout the story, they must deal with untold tragedy that tears them apart. We get a peek into the painful ordeal they both continue to struggle with every day they’re apart. Losing a baby and losing the woman who helped them cook the delicious food at their co-owned restaurant, Grits, is gripping.

Before I Let Go is a tremendously entertaining, gripping story that pulls at your heartstrings and keeps you wondering when and/or if this couple will see a happily ever after. Their sweet reunion at the end is the perfect treat for romance fans.

5. Part of Your World — Abby Jimenez

Part of Your World centers on surgeon, Alexis Montgomery, who unexpectedly falls in love with someone she knows her family will never accept, Daniel Grant.

They meet when he tows her car out of a ditch in Wakan, a small town in Minnesota, where Daniels family has run the town for decades.

It’s a place where people take care of each other — a world Alexis has never known. Not when she comes from a family that values money more than people.

Throughout their journey, we get to see Alexis slowly let down her walls and let Daniel, a man several years her junior, into her heart and her life.

Part of Your World is a great book to read for Valentine’s Day if you want a slow-burn, small-town romance with several laugh-out-loud moments.

Happy V-Day Reading!

Grab your copies at your local, independent bookstore, and snuggle up for a cozy night of romance.
